New Zealand Winter Guide for Pets: Keeping Your Furry Friends Cozy and Happy

New Zealand Winter Guide for Pets: Keeping Your Furry Friends Cozy and Happy

Winter in New Zealand can be very cold, with frosty mornings and cozy evenings by the fireplace. As pet owners, it’s important to ensure that our furry friends stay warm and safe during the colder months. We will explore some tips and tricks to keep your pets cozy and happy throughout the winter season in New Zealand.

Indoor Comfort for your pets

New Zealand winters can be cold and it’s important to provide a warm and comfortable environment for your pets. Make sure they have a cozy space away from drafts and cold floors. Provide them with a soft and comfortable bed placed away from doors or windows to avoid chilly drafts.

Layer up with coats

Pets with short hair or no hair at all feel the cold more than others. So, dressing them in a snug fitting sweater or jacket to provide an extra layer of warmth when they go outside is crucial. Make sure you choose clothing that fits properly around their body without restricting their movement or causing discomfort. A jacket that can go across your pet's chest will be great to help keep the chill off too!

Protect Their Paws

During winter, the ground can become cold, icy and even hazardous. Protect your pet’s paws by using pet friendly booties or applying a paw balm to prevent cracking and irritation. If you live in a place where lots of frost is on the ground, a warm damp cloth to wipe their paws to remove anything they may have picked up while outside will be ideal and to watch for any irritation.

Adjust Your Pet’s Diet

Winter can bring about a decrease in activity levels for both humans and pets. Monitor your pet’s weight and adjust their diet accordingly. If they are less active during the winter months, reduce their food intake to prevent unwanted weight gain. If you’re not sure of your pet’s food, you can speak through one of our Your PetPA NZ experts or consult your local veterinarian to determine the appropriate amount and type of food for your pet’s specific needs.

Exercise and Mental Stimulation for Your Pet

While the chilly weather may make outdoor activities less appealing, it’s essential to ensure that your pets get regular exercise and mental stimulation in the colder months. Engage in indoor games, interactive toys, and puzzle feeders to keep their minds sharp and their bodies active.

Be Mindful of Heat Sources

As temperatures drop, many of us rely on heaters, fireplaces, or electric blankets to keep our homes warm. Ensure that your pets are supervised around these heat sources and avoid leaving them unattended. Keep cords and wires out of reach to prevent accidents, burns, or electrical shocks. Provide alternative warm spots for them, such as cozy pet beds away from heaters or fireplaces.

Provide Mental Comfort for Your Pet

Winter can sometimes bring about moments of sadness or lethargy in both people and our pets. Keep your pet’s spirits high by providing them with plenty of love, attention, and mental stimulation. Engage in activities they enjoy, such as playtime, training sessions, or gentle grooming sessions. A warm and nurturing environment can make all the difference in keeping their spirits lifted.

Regular Health Checkups with the Vet

Winter can make certain health conditions worse in pets, such as arthritis and joint issues.  Schedule regular checkups with your veterinarian to ensure that your furry friend’s health is in optimal condition. They may recommend specific supplements or treatments to help manage any preexisting conditions and provide additional support during the colder months.

Winter in New Zealand can be cold but a beautiful time to bond with your pets even though you might not be able to get outdoors as much as the warmer months. But by following all of these simple yet effective tips, you can ensure your fur babies stay warm, cozy, and happy throughout the winter season.
