New Year's Eve Anxiety in Pets

Tips for Easing New Year's Eve Anxiety in Pets

As we bring in the New Year with celebrations let's remember that lots of new guests and loud noises can be overwhelming for our pets. The loud noises, bright lights, and general excitement can trigger anxiety in our pets, leading to stress and anxiety. In this blog post we will discuss some effective tips and strategies to help ease New Year’s Eve anxiety in pets, ensuring a calm and secure environment for our furry friends.

What calming techniques and products can I use for my anxious pet?

Best calming products for pets

1. Using pheromones for pets to help with anxiety

Using pheromone diffusers or sprays like Adaptil or Feliway which are designed to create a sense of calm in pets can help reduce anxiety and stress.

2. Thunder Shirts for dogs

Thunder Shirts provide gentle, constant pressure, which can have a calming effect on dogs. These snug fitting garments are designed to help with anxiety during stressful situations.

3. Calming Treats for your pet

There are lots of calming treats you can give your pets, containing ingredients to help them with anxiety. These include products like PAW Complete Calming Chews are another supplement that can help calm your pet. The Chews contain tryptophan which helps to make melatonin and serotonin. Melatonin helps regulate the sleep wake cycle, and serotonin is thought to help regulate appetite, sleep, mood and pain. The liver can use tryptophan to produce niacin (vitamin B3), which is needed for energy metabolism and DNA production. The chews also contain group B vitamins and a blend of multivitamins and nutrients to support the general health and nervous function in dogs. Always check with your veterinarian before introducing these types of chews into your pet's diet.

Calming strategies that can help your pets during festive season

1. Gradual desensitisation to noise to help your pet

You can help your pet with the sounds of New Year’s Eve by gradually exposing them to similar noises in the days leading up to the event. Play recordings of fireworks or celebrations at a low volume and gradually increase it over time. This technique works well with thunderstorms too. Reward calm behaviour with treats and positive reinforcement to create positive associations.
Positive reinforcement and training for your pet

Use positive reinforcement techniques to reward calm behaviour in the face of loud noises. When your pet remains composed during simulated fireworks or celebratory sounds, offer treats, praise or even playtime as a reward. Over time, this positive reinforcement can help your pet associate the noises with positive experiences and diminish their anxiety.

How do I calm my pet down during fireworks?

One of the best ways to help anxiety in pets during New Year’s Eve is to establish a safe and secure space where they can retreat if they are overwhelmed. Set up a quiet room with their favourite toys, bed and familiar objects they love. You can play soft, calming music or use a white noise machine to drown out the loud noises associated with celebrations. Introduce this space to your pet gradually before the parties begin and allow them to get comfortable and feel safe.

2. Stay calm and provide reassurance to your pet

Pets often pick up on their owners' emotions, so staying calm and composed is crucial during New Year's Eve celebrations. If you remain relaxed, your pet is more likely to follow suit. Offer gentle reassurance through petting and soothing words to let them know everything is okay. Avoid displaying anxious behaviour yourself, as this can amplify your pet's stress.

3. Create a low stress environment for your pet

Another way to manage anxiety in your pet is to create a low stress environment by dimming the lights and closing curtains to minimise the visual impact of fireworks or bright flashes. Play soft, calming music or use a white noise machine to muffle loud sounds. The goal is to create a serene atmosphere that helps buffer the sensory overload associated with New Year's Eve celebrations.

4. Socialisation and exposure to guests for your pet

If your pet is prone to anxiety, consider exposing them to different environments and social situations gradually. Socialising them to various stimuli can build resilience and reduce fear. Introducing them to different people and getting them used to guests is another great way to reduce fear. You could consider enrolling in positive reinforcement-based training classes or work with a professional trainer to address specific anxiety triggers your pet may have.

5. Physical Exercise to help with anxiety in your pet

Engage your pet in physical activities during the day to tire them out, making them more likely to rest during the evening. A tired pet is generally a less anxious one.

6. Mental Stimulation to help with anxiety in your pet

Provide puzzle toys or engage in interactive play to keep your pet mentally stimulated. This can help distract them from the unsettling noises outside.

7. Identification and Microchipping for your pet

Sometimes your pet might become so frightened they try and escape.

If your pet becomes frightened and tries to escape, it's crucial to have proper identification. Ensure your pet's microchip information is up-to-date and securely fasten an ID tag with your current contact details to their collar. This precaution can ensure their safe return if they happen to wander off during the festivities.

8. Keep your pet indoors during the Holiday season

On New Year's Eve, it's advisable to keep your pets indoors. This helps reduce exposure to the loud noises and potential hazards associated with celebrations. If you need to take your pet outside for bathroom breaks, keep them on a leash to prevent any sudden escapes if you’re out somewhere new where they can wander off.

New Year's Eve can be an exhilarating time for us, but it can be overwhelming for our pets. By implementing these tips for easing anxiety, we can help create a smoother transition into the New Year for our furry companions.
